Leaving Finger Spaces When Writing

When primary students learn to write it is necessary to teach them to leave finger spaces between their words.  If they don't, it can be very hard to read their writing.  A great way to do this in Kindergarten or Grade 1 is to use something other than a finger to leave a space.  I personally like these worm spacers.

I have also seen astronaut spacers (with a play on “space”).  If you don’t have something pre-made like this, you can always use something in your classroom like a paper clip, an eraser, a crayon or colored pencil, or any other small object.

Popsicle sticks are also great to use.  You can have students decorate their sticks with their names or some designs and keep it in their desk.

Here are a few homemade popsicle stick people!
