Spring Activities & Ideas for Teaching in the Elementary Classroom

Are you looking for some fun ways to incorporate Spring into your daily lessons? Some common Spring themes are Earth Day, Easter, Planting / Flowers, Weather Changes, and Animals Being Born. Check out these Spring teaching ideas and activities for your elementary classroom!

Planting & Growing

Spring is a time for growth and renewal.  The snow melts and plants and flowers begin to bloom and grow.  This is a perfect time to introduce science concepts like planting a seed.  It also makes a good Earth Day activity.

Some activities you can do in your classroom are:

  • planting seeds in small paper cups and watching them grow - make an observation booklet and have students record the changes they see
  • cut open fruits and vegetables and study the seeds inside
  • label the parts of a plant
  • talk about what's required to grow plants - seed, soil, water, sunlight
  • cut out pictures of a plant at different stages and have students put them into the correct order and write a procedural writing piece (shown below)

Weather & Seasonal Changes

The weather is getting warmer and students will notice some changes such as windier, rainier and sunnier days.  As the temperatures rise, Spring is a great time to introduce new vocabulary and talk about seasonal changes!

Some activities you can try in your classroom are:

  • record daily weather observations in a journal
  • learn to read thermometers and check the temperature each day
  • find out when the sun rises and sets
  • make a weather pictograph together
  • talk about the different types of clothing needed as the seasons change
  • observe and draw the trees budding

Birds, Animals, & Insects

Spring is a great time to learn about baby birds hatching from their eggs and animals and insects being born.

Some ideas/activities for your classroom:

  • discussing animal life cycles
  • labeling parts of a bird
  • comparing characteristics of mammals and birds
  • matching the names of adult animals to their offspring (ex. sheep/lamb, cow/calf)
  • going on a nature walk to look for birds and animals

Earth Day

Earth Day happens in April each year.  It's a great time to talk about how we can take care of the earth.

Some ideas for teaching this theme are:

  • walk or ride your bike to school
  • teach students to recycle
  • turn off lights in the classroom and work by natural light from the windows
  • talk about water conservation - bring reusable water bottles
  • make birdfeeders
  • learn about composting
